In early 1964, the United States was still reeling from the sudden and tragic death of President John F. Kennedy. Then came the explosion. On February 7, the Beatles arrived in America to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show - an event that spearheaded a revolution in pop culture and the arts. The 1960's had arrived. And America would never be the same!

Signs of the Times: Life in the Swingin' Sixties at the LBJ Library and Museum (December 18, 2004 - Sept. 5, 2005) is an exhibition that captures all of the excitement of the 1960s in every area of American popular culture: from the "British Invasion," Motown, and Psychedelic music to the fashions of go-go dancers, mods and hippies - from the cutting edge comedians and sports personalities to the campy TV shows (and commercials) - and from the "hip" books and movies of a generation to the crass consumerism that became the essence of pop art.

Highlights include:

  • Interactive touch screen monitors featuring television shows ranging from I Spy to The Addams Family.
  • Video clips of breakthrough comedians in a comedy club setting.
  • Sequined psychedelic “butterfly” dresses worn by The Supremes.
  • Examples of Andy Warhol's “Marilyn” silkscreens as well as pop art from Roy Lichtenstein, Peter Max, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Larry Rivers.
  • Literature from Tom Wolfe, Kurt Vonnegut, Truman Capote, and Norman Mailer.
  • Psychedelic style concert posters for Austin's Vulcan Gas Company, an underground venue that featured up and coming bands ranging from Janis Joplin/Big Brother Holding Company to the 13 th Floor Elevators.
  • A 1967 Volkswagen bus…the hippies' transport of choice.

Enjoy this “trip” back to the 1960's at the LBJ Library and Museum from December 18, 2004 through Sept. 5, 2005. The exhibit is open daily (except December 25th ) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Free admission
