The President's Daily Diary: August 3, 1964

President Johnson held an impromptu press conference on the morning of August 3, 1964, to release a statement instructing the Navy to continue and strengthen its patrols in the Gulf of Tonkin and to take action against any further attacks. Throughout the day, he met with and telephoned various officials and advisors about the situation in Vietnam, the upcoming Presidential election, a labor dispute in the shipping industry, and the Poverty Bill and other legislation pending in Congress.
