Remembering Robert McNamara

The LBJ Library remembers Robert McNamara, who served as Secretary of Defense from 1961-1968, which included some of the most important years of the Johnson Administration. McNamara died on July 5, 2009.

• Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon Johnson, reflected on McNamara's life.

"Robert McNamara loved our country and gave her 7 years of his life, 7 days a week, and 24 hours a day.

Under the most trying times he served as Secretary of Defense for two Presidents and 200 million Americans. He gave the nation the best of his considerable talents, doing what he thought was right with the information he had to do the right.

He was our family's friend and we send his family our condolences and love."
