President, Mississippi Conference of Branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 1960-1993; President, Council of Federated Organizations, Mississippi, 1962-1965; Chairman, Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) delegation to the 1964 Democratic National Convention which challenged the seating of the regular Mississippi delegation; Member, Mississippi House of Representatives, 1980-1995.
